About
Andh Bhakt, sometimes spelled as Andhbhakt, refers to a slang term used by liberal and left-leaning Indians to describe Hindu right-wing Modi and BJP followers. The term "bhakt" translates to "devotee" and the term "andh-bhakt" means "blind believer" or "blind devotee." While the use of the term "andh bhakt" on the internet to describe Modi's followers dates back to the early 2010s, memes using the term only began to be widely shared after the year 2020.
Origin
The earliest known notable use of the term "andh bhakt" on the internet was a newspaper story posted on the Wordpress[1] blog BK Neelam on December 13, 2010 (seen below).
Some early internet discussions using the term andh bhakt took place in 2014, with Facebook[2] page RVCJ Media posting a status using the phrase on March 5th, 2014, and Twitter user @itsallryt posting a Twitter[3] status using the term on July 5th, 2014 (seen below).
Spread
On August 10th, 2018, Twitter[4] user @akshaykatariyaa posted a tweet using the word "andh bhakt," gathering over 180 likes in five years (seen below, left). On November 15th, 2018, Twitter[5] user @moronhumor posted a tweet using the term, gathering over 500 likes in five years (seen below, right).
On February 17th, 2021, Instagram[6] page @akashbanerjee.in posted a meme about andh bhakts, gathering over 12,000 likes in two years (seen below, left). On August 13th, 2021, the Instagram[7] page @indian_political_compass_ posted a meme placing andh bhakts on the political compass meme, gathering over 700 likes in two years (seen below, right).
