Andh Bhakt, sometimes spelled as Andhbhakt, refers to a slang term used by liberal and left-leaning Indians to describe Hindu right-wing Modi and BJP followers. The term "bhakt" translates to "devotee" and the term "andh-bhakt" means "blind believer" or "blind devotee." While the use of the term "andh bhakt" on the internet to describe Modi's followers dates back to the early 2010s, memes using the term only began to be widely shared after the year 2020.

Origin

The earliest known notable use of the term "andh bhakt" on the internet was a newspaper story posted on the Wordpress[1] blog BK Neelam on December 13, 2010 (seen below).


Home Hindi Shayri Maa Krishna Suvichar Adhyatmik Kahaniya Bhakt Bano Andh Bhakt Nahi - Hindi Spiritual Short Story 192 भक्त बनो अंध-भक्त नहीं एक था गृहस्थ किसान, सीधा सज्जन । एक .... दिन उसके बेटे की अचानक मृत्यु हो गई। रो-धोकर किसान उसको लेकर अन्त्येष्टि कर्म ... के लिए चल पड़ा। अभी वन में पहुँचा ही था, सामने एक सियार मिल गया। राम-राम के बाद सियार ने वृत्तान्त पूछा- 'मेरा बेटा नहीं रहा। अन्त्येष्टि करने, जलाने जा रहा हूँ' . किसान ने बताया । ... सहानुभूति अभिव्यक्त करते हुये . सियार ने सचमुच जैसी आह भरी और कहने लगा - 'भैया भगवान् कितना निष्ठुर है। . पहले जन्म देता है, फिर प्राण हर लेता है। लेकिन बुरा न मानें, तो एक बात कहूँ। आप .. तो भगवान से भी ज्यादा निष्ठुर हैं। देखिये ! एक दिन इसको खिलाते-पिलाते थे, छाती से ..लगाते थे। कितनी कोमल काया, आप इसे जलायेंगे? बिलकुल दया नहीं है. आप के अन्तः करण में लगता है। किसान-सियार की सहानुभूति से बहुत प्रभावित हुआ, तो फिर आप कोई उपाय बताइये', उसने विनीत भाव से पूछा । उत्साहित होकर सियार बोला-'अरे भाई! हम सब धरती माता की संतान हैं। उन्हीं की गोद में छोटा-सा गड्ढा खोद कर गाड़ दीजिए । देखा नहीं ! मुसलमान भाई तो ऐसा ही करते हैं।' सियार भौतर-भीतर बड़ा प्रसन्न दिखाई दिया, क्योंकि किसान उसकी सहानुभूति से प्रभावित था। सियार की बात मान कर वह वहीं गड्ढा खोदने लगा। सियार बोला-'भाई मुझे तो दूर जाना है, चलता हूँ, नमस्कार ।' इतना कहकर वह आगे बढ़ गया। कुछ ही क्षण बीते थे। पंख फड़फड़ाता हुआ एक काला कौवा आया। उसने भी किसान से वृत्तान्त पूछा- बच्चे के निधन से लेकर सियार की भेंट वार्ता तक सारी कहानी उसने कौवे को भी बताई। कौवा थोड़ा मुस्कुराया, बोला- 'बन्धु ! आप बहुत सरल स्वभाव जान पड़ते हैं। वह कहीं गया नहीं, आगे झाड़ी में छिप गया है। आप बच्चे को गाड़ कर गये और वह भाई बंधुओं सहित आयेगा, इसे खोद कर खा जायेगा ।' किसान ने धन्यवाद दिया और फिर बच्चे का शव लेकर आगे बढ़ चला । अब कौवा साथ हो लिया। बोला -'भाई ! सियार चाहे जितना धूर्त हो, उसकी एक बात तो सच लगती है। आप बच्चे को जलायेंगे ? यह तो सचमुच बहुत बड़ी निर्दयता है ? किसान बोला- 'तो फिर आप कोई उपाय बताइये।' कौवा थोड़ा फूला और एक तरह अपना पाण्डित्य प्रदर्शित किया। बोला - 'भाई मुझे तो यह पारसी लोग अच्छे लगते हैं; पेड़- पौधे या ऊँची जगह छोड़ जाते हैं । पंच तत्व अपने आप पंचतत्वों में विलीन हो जाते हैं, जलाने की क्या जरुरत ।' किसान की समझ में बात आ गई । कौवा बोला - 'भाई ! मुझे तो अगले गाँव सत्यनारायण की कथा बाँचनी हैं, सो अब चलता हूं।' यह कहकर वह भी आँखों से ओझल हो गया। अभी किसान इस व्यवस्था हुआ एक कछुआ आ धमका। 'क्या हो रहा है में जुटने जा ही रहा था कि सामने से रेंगता भाई जी', उसने प्रश्न दागा। किसान ने अब तक की सारी कहानी कछुए को सुनाई। कछुआ बोला-'भाईजी ! कौवा कम चालाक नहीं है। आप यहाँ से हटे और उसने काँव-काँव कर सारे नातेदार न्योते । नोंच-नोंच कर खा जायेगा, बच्चे को। आप कहाँ उसके झाँसे में आ गये ।' ने किसान ने कछुए का धन्यवाद किया । आगे चल पड़ा। अब साथ में कछुआ भी था। उसने अपना सुझाव दिया- 'भाईजी ! जलाना तो सचमुच निर्दयता है। यह रही सामने गंगा जी । आप बच्चे को प्रवाहित कर अपने घर जाइये। किसी के धोखे में न आइये ।' अभी यह वार्ता चल ही रही थी कि श्मशान घाट का भट्ट बाहर आया। बोला -'भाई जी ! यह सारा संसार स्वार्थी है, भगवान की भक्ति तो भली, जो अंधविश्वास में पड़ा, वही ठगा गया। यह कछुआ भी अपने चक्कर में है। पानी में डालते ही सारे कछुए इसी का नाश्ता करेंगे। चलिए, चिता बनाईये, बच्चे को जलाइए, यही अन्तिम सत्य (Click to enlarge) Aap mere jaise ho?
