Anthony Bourdain on a Train refers to an image of celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain looking out of a train window in a foreign country. In January 2024, the image achieved popularity on X / Twitter as it was humorously captioned with jokes about people taking excessive pride in minor knowledge foreign cuisine and being able to pronounce foreign words correctly.
Origin
On January 16th, 2024, X[1] / Twitter user @princefabrizio posted an image of celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain travelling on a train in a foreign country, originally a promotional image for Bourdain's travel and food show Parts Unknown, captioning it, "how it feels to ask for a ‘banh mi’ at the Vietnamese bakery near me rather than going by their menu and calling it a ‘salad roll’" The post (shown below) garnered over 970 reposts and 22,000 likes in one week.
Spread
On January 21st, 2024, X[2] user @Baileymoon15 posted the image with the caption, "white people correctly pronouncing pho." The post (shown below) received over 7,300 reposts and 151,000 likes in three days.
Following the post, the image achieved moderate popularity on X as users combined it with captions about themselves and about white people taking pride in having any minor knowledge about foreign cuisine and being able to pronounce names of foreign dishes correctly. For example, on January 21st, 2024, X[3] user @hunter_hhhh made a post that received over 30 reposts and 1,000 likes in three days (shown below, left). On January 22nd, 2024, X[4] user @LaughterHaver used the image in a post that received over 680 reposts and 14,000 likes in two days (shown below, right).
