Elves Are A Proud And Noble Race! We Are Not Lewd! is a fake quote linked to Marcille, one of the main characters of the manga and anime Delicious In Dungeon. It's been used in a humorous way in association with other fictional characters, mainly of the elven kind.
Origin
The image comes from In Chapter 4 of the Delicious in Dungeon manga, which debuted on May 14th, 2014.[1] In the final panels, Marcille is shown reacting in disgust when offered a mandragore's head for food, breaking down over all the monsters she had to eat so far. The panel of her lamenting out loud (as seen below) was later edited to feature the fake quote.
It's unclear when the meme began. The earliest known "not lewd!" edit of the panel was posted by Tumblr user eversorthewry[2] on June 23rd, 2016, though the edit says "Eldar" and not "Elves" and gained a mere 43 notes, suggesting the edit may predate that post.
Spread
Extant examples of the "Elves Are a Proud and Noble Race" edit begin appearing in the fall of 2017. On September 11th, 2017, it was posted to Imgur[3] by user gubbstrut (shown below).
Over the following years, the quote and panel were both edited in myriad ways. On November 16th, 2017, Redditor Sororita posted a different Delicious in Dungeon panel with the quote to /r/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns,[4] gaining over 300 points in six years (shown below, left). On January 6th, 2020, DeviantArt[5] user Prototopo posted a redraw of the panel featuring Rayla from The Dragon Prince, gaining five favorites in four years (shown below, right).
On January 11th, 2024, the second episode of the Delicious in Dungeon anime premiered, which featured the manga panel that inspired the meme animated (shown below).
