About

Anti-homeless Architecture, also known as Hostile Architecture, Hostile Design or Anti-homeless Design, refers to the modern phenomenon in which the architecture of urban spaces is designed to prevent homeless people from settling down. Anti-homeless benches and anti-homeless spikes are the standout pieces of hostile design, made to prevent homeless people from sleeping by making the surfaces physically uncomfortable. The architectural trend was incorporated into city planning as early as the 19th century. It later became the subject of internet discourse and memes via viral photographs of anti-homeless design which surfaced across Reddit, Twitter and Instagram, among other social media platforms.
