Ariana Grande Licking a Lollipop refers to an image of pop star Ariana Grande walking with and looking at her fiancee Pete Davidson in New York City. The image was used in numerous object labeling memes in the weeks following its publication.

Origin

On June 20th, 2018, Ariana Grande and newly-announced fiancee Pete Davidson were photographed walking in New York City.^[1] The singer, in a bright yellow sweatshirt, is licking a lollipop and appears to be looking lovingly at Davidson, who in contrast is hooded and looking down with his face hidden.

Spread

After the photo was published, it was humorously parodied online in a Buzzfeed^[3] article pretending to give it in-depth analysis. It was also used in numerous object labeling memes generally characterizing Grande as carefree and naive and Davidson as negative choices. This was exemplified in several Astrology-based posts by Instagram meme account @notallgeminis (examples shown below). These posts were compiled in a list by Cheezburger. ^[2]

The image continued spreading on Instagram via object labeling memes. These were covered by Clevver.^[4] Some popular examples include a repost by girlwithnojob that gained over 51,000 likes (shown below, left). A Game of Thrones joke by a fan account for the series gained over 830 likes (shown below, right).
