"7 Rings" is a pop hip-hop song recorded by singer Ariana Grande for her upcoming fifth studio album Thank U, Next. The song's lyrics depict extravagant shopping sprees which inspired Twitter users to use the hashtag #7rings to discuss their own income in comparison.[1]
Origin
On January 18th, 2019, "7 Rings" was released by Republic Records. The song was written by Ariana Grande, Kim "Kaydence" Krysiuk, Njomza Vitia, Tayla Parx, Victoria Monét and its producers Tommy Brown, Charles Anderson and Michael Foster.[2] It also contains a sample from “My Favorite Things”, written by Rodgers and Hammerstein. The music video, directed by Hannah Lux Davis, was released the same day (shown below).
Spread
On January 18th, 2019, YouTuber Dante D'Angelo uploaded a reaction video which gained over 100,000 views within a few hours (shown below, left). In the meantime, Rapper Princess Nokia noted the similarities between her own song to Ariana's (shown below, right).
Twitter users praised Grande's song. Jules Lefevre's tweet gained over 1,400 likes in the first day (shown below, first). Nicholas Liddle tweet saying that "7 Rings" "dethroned" "Thank You, Next" gained 1000 likes the first day (shown below, second).
Twitter user Nicholas Peterson tweeted "7 Ring" lyrics professing he would want them on his grave (shown below, left). Soon after @comprei7aneis tweeted lyrics paired with a photoshopped image of SpongeBob carrying the single (shown below, right).
