Arm Heart Collage Filter refers to a trend in which people use a TikTok filter that helps them to create a selfies-montage of pictures forming a heart with their arms. This collage trend started in 2012 on Facebook and resurfaced in August of 2022 after the filter was uploaded on the video platform.

Origin

One of the first images found of the arm heart collage comes from an August 14th, 2012 post on a Facebook fan page of a Korean girl group called Secret^[1]. The post has one of the members of the group taking dozen of selfies to form a heart shape montage (shown below).

The trend was very popular on social media like Facebook, while Tumblr had tutorials posted to explain how to assemble the photo collage, such as a December 6th, 2013 this blog post by the Chicago School _Chute Middle School (shown below).^[2]

On August 21st, 2022, @magicalcelery posted a video with a TikTok filter^[3] she created that guides people to create the arm heart photo collage with pictures of themselves.

Spread

Five days after the filter was uploaded on TikTok, it accumulated 215,000 videos tagged on the app. Most of the content being made is focused on people doing the arm heart collage for a lover, with captions like “making him/her a lock screen”, such as an August 24th, 2022, by @pecadomortal_, which received 5.9 million views and 879,000 likes in one day (shown below).

The music “I Think I Like When It Rains”, by WILLIS, influenced the trend’s popularity, as the track plays in a majority of "heart collage" videos. For example, in a video posted on August 24th, 2022 by @laya_qvd, a couple is doing the heart collage together while the music is playing in the background. The video got 1 million views and 142,000 likes in one day.
