Arya the Explorer is a fan nickname given to character Arya Stark following the premiere of the final episode of epic fantasy TV series Game of Thrones. In the episode, Arya Stark announces her decision to sail west into uncharted waters, which led to fans comparing the character to Christopher Columbus and cartoon character Dora the Explorer.

Origin

On May 19th, 2019, the final episode "The Iron Throne" of HBO-produces epic fantasy series Game of Thrones premiered.[1] In the episode, character Arya Stark mounts a ship expedition west of Westeros continent into uncharted waters.



Spread

Following the premiere of the episode, users on Twitter, Reddit and other online platforms made posts referencing the plot point, including multiple examples in which Arya Stark was compared to explorer Christopher Columbus and cartoon character Dora the Explorer.

For example, on May 19th, Twitter user @DemetriusHarmon tweeted a joke which gained over 24,400 retweets and 114,600 likes in one day (shown below, left).[2] On the same day, Redditor PityNoodz posted a meme which received over 49,300 upvotes in the same period (shown below, right).[3]
