About

Bran the Broken refers to a nickname given to Game of Thrones character Bran Stark after he is chosen to rule the Six Kingdoms in the final episode of the series. Following the premiere of the episode, memes poking fun at the reasons for the choice, reactions of Bran and other characters and the demeaning nature of the nickname were posted online.

Origin

On May 19th, 2019, the final episode The Iron Throne of HBO-produces epic fantasy series Game of Thrones premiered.[1] In the episode, character Bran Stark is voted to become the next ruler of the Six Kingdoms by high lords of the realm and is referred to by character Tyrion and others as "Bran the Broken".

On the same day, users on Twitter, Reddit and other online platforms poked fun at the reasons given by character Tyrion when nominating Bran Stark as the next ruler, Bran's reaction to his nomination, the demeaning nature of the nickname and other related aspects of the plot point.

For example, on May 19th, 2019, Twitter user @Adam_Jacobi posted a joke which gained over 7,100 retweets and 45,800 likes in twelve hours (shown below, left).[2] On the same day, Twitter user @TheRachelFisher posted a joke which received over 35,200 retweets and 157,200 likes in the same period (shown below, center).[3]
