About
Brienne of Tarth Writing refers to an image macro featuring a shot from the American fantasy series Game of Thrones in which the character Ser Brienne of Tarth writes in the Book of the Kingsguard. Online, people juxtaposed the screenshot with humorous images of what they imagine she is writing (similar to Justin Timberlake's Super Bowl Halftime Show Selfie Kid).
Origin
On May 19th, 2019, HBO aired the series finale of the American fantasy television series Game of Thrones entitled "The Iron Thrones". In the episode, the character Brienne of Tarth (portrayed by Gwendolyn Christie) writes the story of the character Jamie Lannister in the Book of the Kingsguard (screenshots below).[1]
Spread
Following the episode's premiere, many online began replacing the image of the Book of the Kingsguard with other humorous images or captioning the image of her writing with various jokes about what she is writing. For example, Twitter[2] user @DMNug tweeted the image of Brienne with a caption from the film Mean Girls. Within 24 hours, the tweet received more than 24,000 retweets and 92,000 likes (shown below, left).
Twitter[3] user @coryiams tweeted the image of Brienne writing next to a letter from the American reality television series The Jersey Shore. Within 24 hours, the tweet received more than 1,300 retweets and 5,000 likes (shown below, center).
Throughout the evening, others posted variations of the format on Twitter (example below, right).
Several media outlets published articles about the meme, including HuffPost,[4] Mashable, [5] Harper's Bazaar,[6] PopBuzz,[7] Uproxx,[8] Yahoo[9] and more. That day, Twitter[10] published a Moments page about the meme.
