The first example of the meme features a low-res image of a fox and was posted to Instagram in May 2021.

On May 5th, 2021, Instagram^[1] user @mr.__vulpes posted an image macro of a fox leaning against a chain-link fence with the caption, "awww the scrunkly 🥰🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 double tap now if you'd scrunkly the when😆," gaining over 740 likes in four months (shown below).

Spread

On June 14th, 2021, YouTuber^[4] Bakamatsu posted a voiced-over version of the meme using another image of a cat, gaining over 3,300 likes in roughly two months (shown below).

On June 14th, 2021, Twitter^[7] page @dailyseafriends posted an image macro using the phrase over an image of a sea creature, gaining over 850 likes and 170 retweets in roughly two months. On June 20th, 2021, Instagram^[3] page @merciless.sungod posted the original image macro, gaining over 12,400 likes in just over two months.

On June 24th, Twitter^[2] user @sh_4rk posted an original version of the meme, gaining over 700 likes and 50 retweets in a similar span of time (shown below, left). On July 14th, Twitter^[7] user @snakesunfish posted a version of the meme using an image of Otacon from Metal Gear Solid (shown below, right).
