Barbara Corcoran's "And For That Reason, I'm Out"

And For That Reason, I'm Out is a catchphrase spoken by the Shark Tank host and American businesswoman Barbara Corcoran, spoken in some variation when she decides to no longer pursue investing in a company during the TV show. The quote became a referential meme and a prevalent reaction image or GIF throughout the 2010s and 2020s, typically said on social media as a response to others to indicate something they disagree with or don't like.

Origin

On August 9th, 2009, the show Shark Tank first aired, showing prominent business executives taking pitches from entrepreneurs who are trying to get some sort of business deal made with the "Sharks" (investors). When a Shark decided that they no longer were interested in investing with the current company that was being pitched, they would declare in some varying amount of words, that they were "out." This became associated with the show very early on, with the YouTube channel Ohad Gavrieli^[1] uploading a compilation of the various ways that Sharks declared they were out on March 24th, 2013, and earning over 123,000 views in a decade (shown below).

Out of all of the Sharks, however, one was noticed much more than the others when it came to how they declared that they were out. Barbara Corcoran started getting recognition online for the seemingly nonsense reasons why she was declaring she was out of an investment opportunity, with her saying a phrase such as, "I don't like Shrimp, and for that reason, I'm out," which was noticed by others watching the show as it became a common occurrence.

For example, on October 23rd, 2017, the YouTube channel UnSheepify^[2] uploaded a compilation of Barbara declaring that she was out of a deal, with the comments of the video making up several scenarios of their own for why Barbara didn't want to invest in their company (shown below). The video received nearly 200,000 views in roughly five years.

Spread

The jokes about Barbara Corcoran always being out of a deal for the wildest of reasons (as well as the frequency of her "and for that reason, I'm out" catchphrase) spread online as Shark Tank continued to run on TV and grow in virality. Memes about her catchphrase were notably made in 2018 on the website Imgflip.

For example, on June 4th, 2018, Imgflip user JohnJohnsonJohn^[3] uploaded a picture of Barbara Corcoran with a caption declaring that because the business proposal made sense and would earn her a lot of money, she had to declare that she was out, showing the base meaning of the meme of Corcoran being against her own self-interest (shown below).

After years of having different clips of her being used as a meme, Corcoran notably embraced it on December 1st, 2021, by posting a TikTok to her official account^[4] in which she lists several reasons why she has pulled out of investment bids in the past laid on top of the Water, Earth, Fire, Air intro sequence from Avatar The Last Airbender (shown below). The TikTok accumulated nearly 3,500 likes in roughly one and a half years.
