Bazz is a character from the failed 2024 multiplayer video game Concord. During the underwhelming launch of the game, Bazz, a knife-wielding Black female Freegunner, attracted particular attention over her design. On 4chan's /v/ board, the character achieved ironic popularity as an inspiration for artworks and edits, with users applying her distinctive features, such as her purple hair styled in pom poms and futuristic red-tinted teashade sunglasses, to various characters.

Origin

On August 23rd, 2024, the first-person hero shooter video game Concord was released.^[1] The game was met with mixed reviews from critics and an overwhelmingly negative review from players on its launch. Concord severely underperformed with less than 700 concurrent players at its peak, leading to Sony shutting down its servers on September 3rd.

In Concord, Bazz is a mercenary Freegunner and a playable character. Bazz is depicted as a tall Black woman with purple-colored hair styled into pom poms who wears a red long coat and red-tinted teashade sunglasses and wields throwing knives (character trailer shown below).

Many discussions of the game and its poor performance on social media centered on its diverse character designs, which many players reported finding unattractive. In these discussions, Bazz was frequently brought up as an example. The character attracted particular attention on 4chan, where users posted caricature drawings of the character. For example, on September 6th, 2024, an anonymous /v/^[2] user posted a drawing of Bazz imagining her as a character from the Cow and Chicken animated series (shown below).

Spread

In early September 2024, multiple threads dedicated to Bazz were made on 4chan's /v/^[3][4] board (example shown below).

In these threads, drawings of the character, as well as edits of characters from other media in which they were given Bazz's eyeshades and pom poms, were shared.

For example, on September 24th, 2024, an anonymous user posted an edit of the character Sheldon Cooper, which referenced the humorous portmanteau "Bazzinga" — a combination of Sheldon's catchphrase "bazinga" and Bazz's name (shown below).

In mid-October 2024, following the release of bodycam footage of a police officer shooting a Black woman who attacked him with a knife, multiple edits of the woman as Bazz were shared on 4chan's /pol/^[5][6] board.

The character continued to inspire memes on 4chan throughout the fall of 2024, with users editing various characters as Bazz and creating original drawings of her.
