About

Bjork Frat refers to jokes and discourse about a hot take posted to Twitter / X in late September 2024 that described alternative music recording artist Bjork as "the most overplayed and overhyped normie frat bro artist of the past 30 years." The take bewildered many music lovers on the app, as Bjork's music is generally considered very feminine and avant-garde, and is thus generally not thought of as a stereotypical "frat bro" musician. The take led to a series of jokes blending fraternity culture and Bjork music as the tweet garnered virality on the platform.

Origin

On September 21st, 2024, AV Club news editor and Twitter user @grewdillis[1] quote-tweeted a snippet of a Bjork music video, opining on a shift among modern music listeners that makes them distrustful of the taste of older music listeners. The post gained over 1,200 retweets and 20,000 likes in two days.

In response, user @Poppachill[2] wrote, "Yeah man I’m sure people are unfamiliar with the most overplayed and overhyped normie frat bro artist of the past 30 years," gaining over 170 quote-tweets, 180 retweets and 119 likes in the same timeframe.

PoppaChill's take baffled many users and readers on Twitter, and in response to pushback, they said[3] on September 21st, 2024, they'd never been "in or around" a fraternity but were "online friends with one guy in a frat he had a pretty broad taste in music," adding that that guy liked "The Smiths, Crass" and was "probably a Bjork fan."

the ako who wears a mask @AuDHDAndrew · 10h ...just for my own sanity, you're saying "in the 90s/early 2000s, the normie frat bro artist was Björk, and not Eminem, or any of the rap-rock bands"? ... 4 Poppa ChillPill 2006 @PoppaChill 271 581 I've never been in or around a frat. Used to be online friends with one guy in a frat he had a pretty broad taste in music, The Smiths, Crass, probably a Bjork fan 11:27 PM Sep 22, 2024 ...

The take inspired jokes and memes from other users, as Bjork's feminine and alternative music is largely thought of as antithetical to the type of aggressive and masculine music associated with college fraternities. Multiple Twitter users quote-tweeted @PoppaChill's tweet joking that others would never guess the artist they were talking about (example by @acechhh[5] shown below).

For example, on September 22nd, 2024, Twitter user @computer_gay[4] posted an edited video of sorority girls dancing to the Bjork song "Hyperballad," gaining over 1,300 retweets and 13,000 likes in one day.
