About
Blaming the Rothschilds refers to a series of memes in which the blame for life's misfortunes, no matter how minute or random, is put on the Rothschilds, an influential "old money" Jewish family. A parody of anti-Semitic conspiracy memes, the format gained virality on iFunny in October 2022. The meme is often used in conjunction with the Saruman Magically Summoning meme format.
Origin
On January 24th, 2022, iFunny[1] user FriendFox posted a GIF caption Vince McMahon Smelling Money meme captioned, "women receiving money from the Rothschild family to ignore my texts." The post (shown below) gained over 1,300 smiles in 10 months. The post is likely a recreation of an earlier post based on the same format, as on January 19th a still image captioned the same way was shared on Instagram,[2] and, on January 23rd, of Facebook.[3]
Spread
The image saw viral spread in the following months through reposts on Twitter and other sites. For example, on March 24th, 2022, Twitter[4] account @OBamaEraCons reposted the image, with the post gaining over 50 retweets and 590 likes in eight months. Prior to April 13th, an unknown Sigma Male Twitter account posted the earliest derivative meme within the format, a Why Isn't It Possible meme referencing the GIF caption. On April 13th, iFunny[5] user The_Cuddly_Kraken reposted the video, with the post gaining over 960 smiles in seven months (shown below, left).
Prior to September 2022, the format saw limited use on iFunny. For example, on May 7th, iFunny[6] user PresidentJonesy posted a meme that gained over 460 smiles in six months (shown below, right).
On September 14th, the meme then started gaining popularity on iFunny as users posted GIF captions and image captions in which they blamed Rothschilds for random grievances and their own failings. For example, on September 14th, 2022, iFunny[7] user Gorgoroth posted a GIF caption that gained over 1,900 smiles in two months (shown below, left). On October 3rd, iFunny[8] user Meatball_Impaired posted a Saruman Magically Summoning meme (shown below, right) that garnered over 4,000 smiles in one month.
In the following weeks, the Saruman Magically Summoning meme format gained a strong association with the meme, with multiple examples combining the two being featured and going viral on the app. Walter White Cooking GIF caption format has also seen use.
The meme maintained major prevalence on iFunny through October 2022, with examples also appearing on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
