About

Bought A Used Copy Of… refers to parodies of a viral Twitter thread in which a woman announced she'd purchased a used collection of Charles Bukowski poetry which featured dismissive and insulting margin notes written in ink by the previous owner. The woman praised the previous owner's notes, many of which were glib insults at the character Bukowski portrayed in his poetry. The thread inspired others to post pictures of books with overly glib or dismissive notes written in the margin in parody of the original thread.

Origin

On July 23rd, 2021, Twitter user @Leftovers_Movie[1] tweeted, "Bought a used Charles Bukowski book and the best part are the notes in the margins from a woman who clearly was having none of this shit." The first tweet in the thread gained over 10,000 retweets, 3,800 quote-tweets, and 55,000 likes (shown below).

The thread inspired parodies in which people posted joke notes in margins from famous books, with the notes intentionally giving shallow or glib responses to the writing. For example, user @MuscleSkoals[2] posted such a parody with 1984, including a Wow, this is just like 1984 joke, gaining over 11,000 retweets and 130,000 likes (shown below, left). On July 25th, user @Zuza_Real[3] posted a parody featuring Watchmen, gaining over 660 retweets and 7,800 likes (shown below, right)

Compared to Lodi times, therefore, the distribution of the financial means of the realm was organised on new principles. To W--!!! sum up, Sher Khan's attempts emphasised subordination and employment by the centre, not horizontal alliances with aristocratic leaders, pastoral tribes and warlords. Sher Khan penetrated the military labour market along a vertical axis with, amongst others, agrarian-based troopers or, as we might perhaps call them, an emerging gentry in his home counties in Bihar and in the qasbas situated on the East-West river and land routes that formed the main frame of his realm. This did not, of course, mean he tried to monopolise recruitment – that, in India, is impossible, as we have poor the governor shown but it did mean centralisation to the extent that it was feasible. Now what was feasible? Sher Khan's approach presup- poses the command of independent means. We need to know, first, what these were and how they were used. Secondly, it is necessary to inquire whether Indian conditions allowed a programme of centralised recruitment and distribution to become a permanent feature of politics and state formation. I am defntely, burmng this botk today. What an actual freate Treasure It is difficult to understand Sher Shah's reign unless we can find an answer to the question of the origin of the resources with which he financed the personal fidelity of his soldiers who alone could keep the Afghan aristocracy in check.
