Bowser Fart GIF refers to an infamous fart and inflation fetish animation of the Super Mario character Bowser farting fire. Shared in Discord chats since 2021 and used in memes as bait-and-switch media on TikTok since November 2022, in April 2023 the animation gained virality as a reference as users compared other looped animations that utilize tweening to it, similar to Reptilian Backshots.

Origin

On September 24th, 2019, artist MrRyuHayabusa posted^[1] a fart and inflation fetish animation of the villain Bowser from Super Mario video game series to DeviantArt, also posting it to their now-defunct Twitter account @BigFattNinja. The animation (shown below) gained over 10,900 views and was favorited over 210 times in four years.

On October 30th, 2020, YouTuber^[2] Harry Potter uploaded a version of the animation with sound. It is unconfirmed whether this version was originally shared by MrRyuHayabusa on Twitter, or if another user added sound to it later. The video (shown below) received over 155,000 views in three years.

Spread

The GIF has been shared in Discord chats at least since August 2021. On August 16th, 2021, Tenor^[3] user ballstalker66 posted a Big Brother Orders meme referencing the GIF (shown below).

Starting in late November 2022, the GIF achieved popularity on TikTok as bait-and-switch media. For example, on November 29th, TikToker^[4] 1stgabeitch posted a meme that used the GIF as an unexpected punchline that received over and 3.2 million views and 772,000 likes in six months (shown below, left). On December 2nd, TikToker^[5] amystittt0 posted a Powerscaling meme between the GIF and Lois Griffin from Family Guy that gained over 390,000 views and 32,200 likes in five months (shown below, right)

On April 12th, 2023, Twitter^[6] user @bara_moe_bltch quote tweeted Steve Cutts' short animated film "MAN," commenting, "why is he animated like bowser fart gif." The post (shown below, left) gained over 920 retweets and 29,300 likes in three weeks.

The tweet popularized a comparison between looped animations, particularly those that utilize the tweening animation method, and the Bowser Fart GIF on Twitter. For example, on April 23rd, 2023, Twitter^[7] user @RealYouTubeKids quoted tweeted an AI-generated video, commenting, "Every time I see someone show off an animation they made using AI, it always looks like bowser fart gif." The tweet (shown below, right) gained over 2,600 retweets and 55,100 likes in one week.

Devious Reptilian Backshots refers to a tweening animation and GIF of Spider-Man getting pulled into a sewer from behind by the Lizard, also known as Dr. Curt Connors. The animation was posted to Instagram in January 2023 and became the subject of memes and reactions in March after going viral on TikTok and Twitter when a user described the animation as Spider-Man taking "devious reptilian backshots" from the Lizard, meaning the Lizard is having sex with Spider-Man from behind.
