About

Buffalo Bell (jersey no. 222), often dubbed Bell-Chan, or BuBell by fans[1], is a mascot for the Japanese baseball team Orix Buffaloes alongside her brother Buffalo Bull (jersey no. 111). Bell resembles a pink, anthropomorphic buffalo wearing a modified baseball uniform in the team's colours, often wearing a baseball glove. She became extremely popular among both the Nippon Professional Baseball league, and online communities for her cute and friendly appearance.

Origin

The designs for the Orix Buffaloes mascots were submitted by professional graphic artist and character designer Kochi Juki (幸池 重季) to the Orix Buffaloes team in 2009.[2] On March 9 2011, the names Buffalo Bull and Buffalo Bell were selected from a collection of over five thousand fan-submitted suggestions, with the names cited as being symbol of team themes such as "friendliness" and "victory".[3]

Spread

Since her release as one of the team's official mascots, Buffalo Bell has become widely popular, both among fans and followers of the team. This is seen in the increasing presence of the sibling mascots in official Orix Buffaloes media, as well as the introduction of more mascot-themed products, apparel, and merchandise from the Orix Buffaloes.[4] Fan-created products and artworks have also began to appear on sites such as Twitter and Pixiv, including a fan-made twitter account dedicated to Bell.[5]
