"But, Peter-- You're going to die doing this" is a line spoke by Mary Jane Watson to Peter Parker from issue #32 of the Spider-Man comic "Ultimate Spider-Man: Public Scrutiny". It is often used in combination with songs as a backing track to various edits spread across the internet, as the intensity of the lines can be applied to many situations where someone is passionate about something.
Origin
"MURDERER! – Ultimate Spider-Man: Public Scrutiny | Part Four & Five | Issue #31, 32 – Motion Comic" was uploaded to YouTube as a fan dub of the comic book on March 28th, 2020. This is where the lines were first vocalized, and due to the nature of the fan dubbing, very high quality vocal clarity and no background noise or music (As opposed to if the lines were from a T.V. show or Movie) it is prime for repurposing.[1]
Spread
The earliest instance of the use of these specific vocals was on a Spiderman edit on TikTok, posted on December 19th 2022 by real.frr1 to the backing track of Heart to Heart by Mac DeMarco[2]
Although largely spread through trending TikTok sounds incorporating different music as a backing track to these performative lines, one of the earliest instances of an edit using these vocals actually comes from YouTube. An edit made by Badman on Youtube on April 1st 2023 had these Mary Jane vocal lines, along with a few others from the same episode of the fan dub, also played over Heart to Heart by Mac DeMarco[3]
Another early edit focused around Spiderman, being released November 3rd 2023 by Ludochris_edits and utilizing Jealous by Eyedress as a backing track[4]
Finally we get to the most popular of the various songs, Glare – Void in Blue being used as the backing track, originally uploaded on August 15th 2024 by user soggy_apple_[5], and accumulating 7.5M views and 1.5M likes in less than a month. This sound gained popularity that the others had not seen, and was re-used all across TikTok to generate more than 37,500 videos in the first month. The videos primarily consisted of either gym or sports content, but there was a wide variety of passions showcased, as users saw the sound as an opportunity to show their commitment to their craft, implying that a loved one may say they are willing to die for it.
