Cards When You Win In Solitaire refers to a series of memes that mock the cascading waterfall effect featured in Microsoft's solitaire video game. These images portray the effect through images and photographs of cultural figures with the same effect.
Origin
Developed in 1989 by Microsoft intern Wes Cherry, the company released Microsoft Solitaire with Windows 3.0 in 1990.[1] When the player wins a game, an animation that shows the cards bouncing with a cascading effect (shown below).
On June 11th, 2019, Redditor [2] WalrusSuicide posted an image of the cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants with the cascading effect. They captioned the image with a Nobody meme and the line "Cards when you win in a solitaire." The post received more than 65,000 points (94% upvoted) and 225 comments in two days (shown below).
Spread
That day, Redditor[3] DrPepperPower posted a similar image featuring a Shiba Inus dog. The post received more than 6,400 points (98% upvoted) and 20 comments in two days (shown below, left).
Two days later, on June 13th, Redditor[4] tyler27231488 posted a version featuring the White Guys Selfie. The post received more than 5,100 points (98% upvoted) and 40 comments in 24 hours (shown below, center).
Since June 11th, Redditors, particularly on the /r/dankmemes subreddit, have posted variations with the same caption (example below, right).
