About
Cels Be Seething Over Chads refers to memes that claim that a group of people, referred to as X-cels (in a derogatory manner), is envious of another group of people, referred to Y-chads (in a complimentary manner), to create the impression that Y is better than the X. Spawned by a viral meme about jumping off a cliff in April 2022, the phrasal format saw spread on social media in the following months.
Origin
On April 14th, 2022, Twitter[1] user @gateway_71 posted an edit of a webcomic in which one person convinces the other to jump off a cliff, replacing the key line with "cliffcels be seething over jumpchads." The meme is a parody of the virgin / soyjak / incel vs. chad dynamic, and the line easily convinces the person to take the jump. The post gained over 2,000 retweets and 18,800 likes in three months (shown below).
While in its original meaning suffix "-cel" is used in incelosphere to denote people who are celibate because of a certain deficiency, in memes, the suffix has been used with the purpose of insulting and belittling any group of people (i.e. presenting those who chose to stay on the cliff in the negative light).
Spread
On April 24th, Twitch streamer Keffals tweeted[2] the earliest known derivative meme using the phrasal template, with the post gaining over 150 retweets and 3,300 likes in three months (shown below).

On June 4th, Redditor toxithot posted an Eating Kit-Kats the Wrong Way version of the meme that gained over 1,700 upvotes in the /r/196[3] subreddit (shown below).
In July 2022, the phrasal template received further spread online, primarily on Twitter.
