About
Chance the Rapper "I Love My Wife", also known as Chance the Wife Guy, refers to parodies and criticisms of Chance the Rapper's performance on his album The Big Day. On The Big Day, Chance often raps about his domestic bliss with wife Kirsten Corley, which listeners noticed and mocked, particularly as many critics and fans felt the album as a whole was a step down from Chance's previous work. Many opined Chance had become a Wife Guy, a recently popularized online term for men who publicly glorify their wives and brand themselves through their marriages.
Origin
On July 26th, 2019, Chance the Rapper released The Big Day, his debut album (though he had released three successful full-length mixtapes prior).[1] He has claimed the album was inspired by the dance floor at his wedding day, and the record features multiple shoutouts to his wife, Kirsten Corley. Genius[2] created a video compiling each time Chance the Rapper mentions his wife on the 22-track album (shown below).
Spread
The day after the album was released, Twitter user @charliewinsmore tweeted a video parodying Chance on the album with a track that says "I love my wife" repeatedly. The tweet gained over 18,000 retweets and 67,000 likes (shown below).

Critics largely panned the album, as many felt it was a step down from his previous work. Some critics were particularly critical of the way Chance rapped about his wife. The Nation[3] wrote that Chance's exaltation of his wife was tinged with defensiveness and smugness, saying "As he repeatedly disrupts the show to grunt at the peanut gallery, his euphoria starts to feel strained and impersonal," and, "While Chance doesn’t treat his partner, Kirsten Corley, like a trophy wife exactly, a kind of erasure occurs as he relentlessly extols their love." Vice[4] went so far as to call The Big Day Chance's "Wife Guy LP." Fans shared a similar sentiment, as several tweets lamented the constant references to Corley on The Big Day. These include tweets by @MrBTheTeach[5] (shown below, left) and @ShaggyGOD3[6] (shown below, right).
Chance attempted to join in on the meme by posting a video of himself and Corley to his Instagram account, inviting his fans to spam "I Love My Wife" in the comments.[7]
