About

Chimney Day refers to multiple posts containing images of chimneys which appeared in /r/me_irl, /r/dankmemes and other subreddits on April 6th, 2019, with the event growing into an annual prank. The influx of chimney memes was caused by several announcement posts plotting the event a year in advance, first of which was made in January 2018.

Origin

On January 4th, 2018, Redditor I_Dont_like_Me_Irl suggested posting multiple images of chimneys on /r/me_irl subreddit on April 6th, 2019 without providing any context in order to confuse other Redditors.[1] The post gained over 7,500 upvotes in six months.

Spread

On October 9th, 2018, Redditor Smiff- resubmitted the image to /r/me_irl subreddit, where it gained over 7,100 upvotes.[2] In the following 24 hours, the image was also reposted to /r/dankmemes[3] (11,100 upvotes), /r/memes[4] (181 upvotes) and on Tumblr[5] (1,300 likes and reblogs). Additionally, in the period between October 9th, 2018 and April 6th, 2019, the image was reposted on Reddit several times.

On April 6th, 2019, multiple images of chimneys, as well as memes based on the trend, were submitted to Reddit, primarily to /r/me_irl community.[6][7] The trend later also spread to Instagram.[8]
