Close Enough, Welcome Back X is a catchphrase meme that assimilates famous people based on their traits, similar to the Died / Born / Welcome Back meme format. The phrasal template was popularized in February 2024 mostly by the anime and K-pop community on X / Twitter.
Origin
On February 3rd, 2024, X[1] user @wildk4rdz posted one of the earliest known versions of the "close enough, welcome back" phrasal template, adding a screenshot from the Blue Lock anime, captioning the post, "close enough. welcome back meguru bachira ❤️." The tweet (seen below) amassed over 1,600 likes and 290 reposts in six months.
Spread
The phrasal template was popularized on X over the next few months of 2024, sparking many variations in which fans joked about traits or characteristics of a person that align with others.
For instance, on April 11th, 2024, X[2] user @rtylenole used the phrase to compare a Jujutsu Kaisen character with the puppet Tulio Triviño from the Chilean children's program 31 Minutos. The post (seen below) received roughly 39,000 likes and 7,100 reposts in five months.
On August 22nd, 2024, X[3] user @Scidarky posted a video replying to a tweet about the Brazilian Miku trend, captioning it, "Close enough welcome back Miku Paranauê," which amassed over 138,000 views and 14,000 likes in a week.
