Colin Furze Blowing Up refers to a video caption meme format based on a clip of British inventor and YouTuber Colin Furze gaming on a computer while sparks fly and explosions go off around him, In August 2023, the clip achieved popularity on iFunny and TikTok, being used to describe dramatic deaths.

Origin

On July 14th, 2023, YouTuber[1] Colin Furze posted a video titled "Extreme 4D gaming setup" in which he played on a 4D gaming setup of his own invention featuring various feedback devices, such as giant fans imitating wind and external systems imitating explosions and splattering. In one part of the video, shown in slow motion, Furze games as multiple explosions are going off all at once (shown below). The upload received over 1.5 million views in two months.

Prior to May 19th, 2023, X user @imdrip777 captioned the clip of explosions going off around Furze "Old gen console players trying to install GTA 6" (post no longer available). On May 19th, 2023, TikTok[2] user rockstarlogic reuploaded the meme, with the post gaining over 4.3 million views and 55,700 likes in four months.

Spread

The post saw viral spread through reposts on X, TikTok and other platforms in the following months: for example, on May 20th, 2023, X[3] user @RogueOg1 shared it, gaining over 10 reposts and 130 likes in four months.

The video did not see further use as a meme format until late August 2023, when it achieved popularity as a caption format on iFunny. On August 28th, 2023, iFunny[4] user ReaperLeviathanFucker posted a meme about video game Subnautica that received over 3,800 smiles on the app in two weeks (shown below, left). Later that day, iFunny[5] user TheBrokenRedClock posted a version of the meme about Battlefield 4. The post (shown below, left) received over 110 smiles in two weeks.

The format maintained its popularity on iFunny and X through early September 2023.
