About

Angine de Poitrine is an experimental rock duo from Saguenay, Québec, famous for its microtonal music and its costumes. Because of their very recognizable disguises, they have been the object of many memes.

Context in Saguenay

The valley of the Saguenay river in Québec is a region that has been notorious for its musical experimentation since the 1980's. It hosts the Centre d'expérimentation musicale (CEM), and is also where the heavy metal band Voivoid was from.

During the same period, Quebecer nouveau cirque emerged as an alternative to the Barnum model, with the famous Cirque du Soleil that came to dominate this sector.

The journalist Erin MacLeod suggested that the two influences merged to gradually form what she calls "circus rock", and that the theatrality of circus came to become more and more common in Quebecer music, with examples such as Les Georges Leningrad, Gros Mené, Fantôme, Fet.nat, Klô Pelgag.

"All this to say is that I think that in the same way that it was Quebec that gave the world Cirque du Soleil, it is this circus mentality that pushes the artistic element, pushes the theatrical element, pushes the complex, the technical, the avant-gardism. This is where Angine de Poitrine comes from. And I also like the fact that there’s a lot of sort of resistance to norms as well^[1]."

Origins of the band

The two men nicknamed Khn (guitarist) and Klek (drummer) formed the band in 2019. They have been playing together since they were 13 years old. The duo was booked to perform twice in one week, and they were concerned that people would not attend the second show. They decided to perform with papier mâché masks and polka-dotted costumes (that looks like a proboscis monkey in the case of Klek). The name of the band (angina pectoris in French) was originally suggested as a joke, but it was kept. It was later proposed that it illustrated well their music, that would sound like a "dissonance-induced cardiac malfunction".

What was meant as a joke became a huge success. The public found that so funny it became a hit.

Khn and Klek became more fleshed-out characters from then on: they are aliens visiting Earth having an obsession for pyramids (possibly an allusion to the Ha! Ha! Pyramid commemorating the Deluge of Saguenay of 1996). They don't know French and only speak their alien language.

Becoming viral

After getting much attention in Québec, Angine de Poitrine performed at the Rencontres trans musicales of Rennes in France in December 2025. Footage of that show was released by the Seattle radio station KEXP on 5 February 2026. It was at that moment they went internationally viral. After one week the footage was released, it received 2 million views.

On 9 March 2026, Angine de Poitrine was invited to the famous talk show Tout le monde en parle, where they stayed in character and conducted the interview in their weird alien language. The footage of the interview went viral as well, building further on their weird personas. As they were about to release their second album, they performed its first track Fabienk for television.

After that interview, many businesses in Québec joked that they changed their esthetics for that of the band for April's Fool^[2] (poisson d'avril in French).

The band's delirium was magnified by the population, that started to produce all kinds of meme around the style of Angine de Poitrine.

On 15 April 2026, Google decided to put a polka-dot background to users that queried "Angine de poitrine" in the search engine.

Negative reception by some people

Not everyone liked the weirdness of the costumes or the strange "language" Khn and Klek spoke. For example, the famous columnist Sophie Durocher in Québec found their rise strange. She found them as enjoyable to listen as "a child crying, a cat meowing and a dog barking" and that made her stay "stone-faced" (de glace)^[3]. Considering that Sophie Durocher had often rejected common progressive talking points in her columns, her political opponents found that stance funny and memed about it. There was a flood of outraged comments that Angine de Poitrine shouldn't have been invited to Tout le monde en parle^[4].

The negative reactions were sufficiently frequent that Steve Trudel felt necessary to explain in details the appeal of Angine de Poitrine:

Both the insane enthusiasm of the fans of Angine de Poitrine and the visceral annoyment of the detractors amused the Quebecer memetic scene, that decided to use memes to troll both sides. The gallery below offers a good selection of those.

Some memes simply made puns with the name, with for example Sœur Angèle (a nun famous for her cooking), or poutine, the famous fast-food Quebecer meal or aubergine de Poitrine (eggplant).

Angine de Poitrine memes also reused several existing Quebecer memes, such as the « Les gens qui parlent en français, ils ont tellement de charisme ! » of Pokimane, the chasse-galerie or the memes of Passe-Partout.
