About

Tulpamancy refers to the creation and maintaining of Tulpas, which are regarded by the tulpamancy community as "an entity created in the mind, acting independently of, and parallel to your own consciousness."[1] Online communities have been created for tulpamancers to gather and discuss it, most notably Tulpa.info[1] and the /r/Tulpas subreddit.[2]

History

Before its modern usage, "tulpa" referred to physical beings made out of thoughts in Tibetan Buddhism. It saw a variety of spikes of interest in western culture, but it wasn't until around the beginning of 2010[6] that it gained the definition it has now. Around that time, on 4chan's paranormal board, /x/, discussion began on the topic of tulpas. The first tulpamancy guide was written by a user by the name of Irish_, followed soon after by FAQ_Man's.[7] Eventually, /x/ became bored of tulpas, so the tulpamancy community moved to an IRC channel.[8]

After they moved to IRC, 4chan user Pleeb began attempting to spread information about tulpas to various 4chan boards. It became immensly popular on 4chan's /mlp/ board at first. Around that timeframe, a wiki[3] and a subreddit[2] were created for discussion about tulpas. Once tulpa discussion on /mlp/ began to die down, several threads were posted on various other boards until Pleeb decided to create Tulpa.info on April 16th, 2012.[8]

Online Relevance

On February 12th, 2012, a wiki was created for Tulpas.[3] It has 36 pages after about 4 years. A month later, on March 27th, 2012, the /r/Tulpas subreddit was created.[2] It gathered over 10,000 comments and 9,500 subscribers in about 4 years.

On April 16th, 2012, Tulpa.info was created.[8] The majority of the content was implemented in between then and April 26th, 2012. The Tulpa.info forums[5] generated over 145,000 posts in over 8,250 threads in around 4 years.

On May 31st, 2014, another wiki was created for Tulpas.[4] It has 248 pages after about 2 years.
