The December 22 Incident or TikTok Slideshow Incident refers to a period of time supposedly starting on December 22nd, 2022, and ending around December 25th when TikTok slideshows sharing adult content hidden in the slides began going viral without moderators taking them down. It's unclear exactly what sound or video sparked this, or why the videos were allowed to go viral, although several users made videos referencing this in the days following the incident. Throughout 2023, TikTokers continued to post videos referencing and speculating about the rumored incident.

Origin

On December 22nd, 2022, TikTok users began to notice slideshow posts with adult content and nudity in the slides, particularly hentai images, going viral on their For You Pages. For example, on that date, Twitter^[1] user @Ghosty6913 posted a screenshot of one of the slideshows, writing, "TikTok needs to be deleted from existence. THIS WHOLE SLIDESHOW WAS JUST HENTAI???" (shown below). It is unclear if this is the original slideshow or just one example of the slideshows.

Spread

On December 23rd, 2022, Twitter^[2] user and Twitch streamer @PaymoneyWubby posted, "If you aren't on slideshow porn tiktok you missing out. Every third swipe is dirty dishes and a whole asshole," garnering over 4,000 likes in five months. On January 2nd, 2023, a Redditor asked /r/Tiktokhelp^[3] for a link to the slideshow inciting the incident, writing, "guys I can recover the December 22 2022 incident if someone copied the link of the slideshow." Throughout early 2023, numerous TikTokers posted videos and memes about the incident (examples shown below).

On May 23rd, 2023, TikToker^[4] @noahglenncarter posted a video about the incident, hypothesizing that the moderation team was off for Christmas at the time and therefore didn't remove the offending content, garnering over 59,000 views in under an hour (shown below).
