About
Destiel Confession refers to an exploitable recaptioning format based on a scene from the television series Supernatural. Edits follow the format of Castiel confessing his love to Dean Winchester and Dean responding with an unrelated, real-life current newsflash. The format originally gained traction in 2021 and continued to grow in popularity throughout 2023.
Origin
On November 5th, 2020, the finale of the television series Supernatural, titled "Despair" aired. In one scene, Castiel confesses his love to Dean Winchester before being taken away to hell (shown below), confirming the long-running ship between the two characters referred to as "Destiel," a portmanteau between "Dean" and "Castiel."
On September 2nd, 2021, Tumblr[1] user outoftouchthursdayschild posted the earliest known instance of the format, captioned with the text "Abba is dropping a new album on Nov. 5th" (shown below), receiving over 14,600 likes and 8,500 reblogs in two years.
Spread
Various users on Tumblr would continue to post edits. For example, on October 6th, 2021, Tumblr[2] user samdyke posted a version that announced that the Zodiac Killer had been identified, in reference to reports that Gary Francis Poste was allegedly the killer.
In another, on October 12th, 2021, Tumblr[3] user couldnt-think-of-a-funny-name posted an edit referencing a character on-screen stating that there are no wolves in Pennsylvania, receiving roughly 46,000 likes and 40,000 reblogs in under two years.
The format would continue to spread and be utilized into 2023. For example, on January 25th, 2023, Tumblr[4] user leatherluxe posted an edit stating that "Elon Musk is being sued by the King of England", in reference to Elon Musk being sued by the Crown Estate for not paying rent (shown below, left), receiving over 51,000 likes 31,000 reblogs in eight months.
On June 22nd, 2023, secondbeatsongs[5] posted an edit announcing the discovery of wreckage from the OceanGate Submersible Incident (shown below, right), receiving over 22,000 likes and 10,000 reblogs in three months.
