About
Marth's Grab Range refers to the ability of the fighter Marth in Super Smash Brothers Melee to grab characters from a far distance, particularly in contrast to his grab animation. The grab has been a running joke in the Smash community for years.
Origin
In Super Smash Brothers Melee, released in 2001, Marth has the fourth-longest grab hitbox in the game, behind Young Link, Link, and Samus, and the longest non-tether grab hitbox.[1] A tether grab is a grab that uses a rope-like item, such as Link's hook shot, which extends away from the fighter to pull another fighter towards them from a distance. Marth appears to grab fighters with only his hands. The unique range of Marth's grab was demonstrated in a GIF posted to Imgur on September 28th, 2013,[2] showcasing how Marth's grab range is longer than that of Yoshi's tether grab.
Spread
The length of Marth's grab range has long been a subject of parody among Smash fans. On January 1st, 2017, YouTuber scrumpy made a video parodying Marth's grab range with editing tricks, gaining over 1.6 million views (shown below, left). On September 3rd, 2018, YouTuber Vishera Games made a similar parody, gaining over 72,000 views (shown below, right).
It has also been popularly used in meme templates that involve grabbing, such as Sasuke Choke Edits and Abby Choke Edits. Twitter user @actualdrewbabe posted a Sasuke Choke Edit using Marth, though the original tweet has since been deleted (shown below, left). An Abby Choke Edit appeared on /v/ (shown below, right).
