About
Dio Walk, also known as Gamer Dio and Headset Dio, refers to several meme formats based on panels from manga series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders. Stemming from JoJo Approach memes, the subformat spun into a separate direction following the addition of a manga panel featuring Dio with folded hands.
Origin
On January 20th, 1992, chapter 251 "DIO's World Part 5" of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Cursaders manga was published in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine.[1] In one panel of the chapter, main antagonist Dio Brando is shown sitting in the back of the car with his hands folded, commanding a person in the front seat to drive through the crowded sidewalk (shown below, left). On February 24th, 1992, chapter 256 "DIO's World Part 10" of the manga was published, containing a scene of main protagonist Jotaro Kujo approaching Dio Brando (shown below, right).[2]
Spread
On June 13th, 2015, Tumblr user scarymonstersasc posted one of the earliest JoJo Approach edits, referncing the upcoming E3 gaming conference (shown below).[3] The post gained over 3,800 notes in four years.
On December 14th, 2018, Reddit user A4E3 posted the earliest known edit of the manga panel showing Dio with folded hands to /r/ShitPostCrusaders subreddit (shown below, left).[4] The post gained over 1,300 upvotes in five months. On March 10th, 2019, Redditor justiono uploaded the earliest known combined version of the meme to /r/ShitpostCrusaders subreddit, referencing Alright Bro I'm Boutta Head Out meme (shown below, right).[5] The post gained over 240 upvotes in one month.
This combined version of the format gained significant spread in April 2019, with multiple notable posts appearing in /r/ShitpostCrusaders subreddit. A version of the meme in which Dio and other JoJo's Bizarre Adventures characters wear gaming headsets gained popularity following a popular post made by Twitter user @PTSDGuts on April 8th, 2019 (shown below).[6]
