The meme first appeared on the Doki Doki Literature Club subreddit in July 2018 and featured the character Monika. It spread slowly over the following years as an exploitable meme format, where the character associated with the caption is changed.

Origin

On July 1st, 2018, Redditor spartanboi96 posted a meme to the /r/DDLC^[1] subreddit that shows Doki Doki Literature Club character Monika standing under the caption, "Do NOT repost this image or she will appear in your room at 3 AM," garnering roughly 120 upvotes in eight years. This is the earliest known version of the meme.

Later that day, Redditor SeanTG246 posted an edit of the meme to the /r/DDLC^[2] subreddit that instead encourages you to repost the meme, garnering over 370 upvotes in the same span of time.

Spread

The Do Not Repost This Image meme format spread over the following years. As a meme format, the character associated with the caption is replaced, while the text at the top typically remains the same.

On August 1st, 2022, X^[3] user @CATBRAINCELL posted a meme that places a close-up photograph of a cat under the caption, garnering over 4,900 likes in four years.

On April 6th, 2024, Redditor killerfreedom255 posted a version of the meme to the /r/HonkaiStarRail^[4] subreddit that gained over 1,000 upvotes in two years.

On July 26th, 2026, X^[5] user @FunnyDeiGrunt quote-posted their own post sharing a version of the meme with the character Sancho from Limbus Company, writing, "Why is she not appearing," joking that they reposted the image specifically so the character would appear.

Later that day, X^[6] user @0NWARDROCINANT3 quoted the post with a series of images in a thread that slowly show the character appearing, garnering over 23,000 likes in a day.
