About

Doctor Doom Toots As He Pleases refers to a photoshopped panel of a 1981 issue of Spidey Super Stories, in which the villainous Doctor Doom, holding a magical horn, is about to blow it to summon a sea monster. In the photoshop, the character Namor says "Do not toot it!" and Doctor Doom replies, "Fool! Doctor Doom toots as he pleases!" The panel has been spread online with some believing it is legitimate dialogue from the comic book.

Origin

The panel comes from a 1981 issue of Spidey Super Stories.[1] In the comic, the character Namor warns Doctor Doom from using a magical sea horn to summon an aquatic monster. Doctor Doom replies, "Fool, Doctor Doom does as he pleases!" (shown below).

NOW TAKE ME TO YOUR THRONE ROOM! WE ARE THERE! THAT SHELL! DO NOT USE IT! TOOT! WHAT IS IT? THE SEA HORN! FOOL! DOCTOR DOOM DOES AS HE PLEASES! ARROOO! THAT SOUND IS COMING FROM OUTSIDE! WHAT COULD MAKE SUCH A NOISE?

At some point prior to May 28th, 2016, an edit changed Namor and Doctor Doom's dialogue to read "Do not toot it!" and "Fool! Doctor Doom toots as he pleases!" The earliest known reference to the comic appeared on that date in the Official Fan forums,[2] though the image is no longer hosted on the page. The earliest known extant post of the edited panel was posted to /r/funny[3] on September 18th, 2016 (shown below).

Spread

Over the following years, the "toot" edit became an exploitable, with memers editing other characters into the edited panel. For example, on August 15th, 2021, Redditor JustinDreamz posted a Fire Emblem Heroes edit in /r/FireEmblemHeroes[4] that gained over 2,100 points in three years (shown below, left). On July 20th, 2020, Twitter user ackerchou[5] posted a Shin Megami Tensei edit that gained over 60 retweets and 170 likes in four years (shown below, right).
