Dog On Da Counter or Wife's Not Home, Dog On the Counter is a TikTok trend in which the caption, "X's not home, you know what that means," X often being "wife" or "girlfriend," is displayed over someone opening a beer, followed by a cut to a video of the dog or another pet sitting on the counter, the caption changing to, "do on da counter." The trend began around August 2023 and became increasingly popular over the following months. The trend is often set to a remix of Linkin Park's "Lying From You" and Project Pat's "Take Da Charge."

Origin

While it is unconfirmed who started the trend, it began as early as August 2023 with a similar trend where the caption, "X's not home, you know what that means" is displayed while "Lying From You" plays, followed by footage of an animal in the house while "Take Da Charge" plays under the caption, "X in da house." For example, on August 3rd, 2023, TikToker^[1] @simmons5.3 posted a video like this with a horse, garnering over 7.1 million views in six months (shown below, left).

On August 28th, TikToker^[2] @apolloandbandit posted a version with their dog, garnering over 3.4 million views in six months (shown below, right).

Spread

The trend spread over the following months, usually with dogs or cats. On October 22nd, 2023, TikToker^[3] @the3weeens posted a video following the trend, garnering over 1.8 million views in four months (shown below).

On February 1st, 2024, TikToker^[4] @jackstephens22 posted a video following the trend that gained over 6.1 million views in three weeks (shown below, left). On February 15th, TikToker^[5] @kyle.christie posted a version of the trend with a kitten that gained over 55.4 million views in four days (shown below, right).
