About

Donald Trump's White Sign is a photoshop meme featuring an image of 2016 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump holding a white sign while speaking in front of the National Association of Home Buildings in mid August 2016.

Origin

On August 11th, 2016, Donald Trump delivered a speech at the National Association of Home Buildings, where he held up a large white graph showing a sharp decline in home ownership in the United States (shown below).

That day, the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign's deputy digital communications director Rob Flaherty posted a screen capture of Trump holding a blank version of the graph with the instructions "go to town, folks" (shown below). In 24 hours, the tweet gained over 2,600 likes and 1,000 retweets.[1]

Spread

Immediately after, Twitter user Dylan Hulser posted a photoshopped version with Harambe the gorilla in a red crosshair, gathering upwards of 4,800 likes and 3,900 retweets in 24 hours (shown below).[2]

Meanwhile, Reddtior Teenraptor submitted a blank template image to /r/photoshopbattles, where it was promptly removed for violating the subreddit's prohibition of images centered around hand-held signs. Also on August 11th, Redditor Ask_If_Im_A_Cactus posted a photoshopped image of Trump holding a photograph of Hillary Clinton kissing former Ku Klux Klan member Robert Byrd to /r/the_donald[8] (shown below, left). The following day, Redditor Reddit__PI submitted a photoshopped version containing a nude painting of Trump to /r/EnoughTrumpSpam,[4] where it gained over 3,100 votes (76% upvoted) and 50 comments that day (shown below, right).
