Indian Soap Opera Edits refers to a dramatic style of video editing credited to and popularized by Indian daytime soap operas that featured over the top music and edits, often in rapid succession. Video clips from various Indian TV soap operas first started going viral on YouTube in 2016, before evolving into a meme video editing format.

Origin

The earlist known viral video of a dramatically edited Indian soap opera was posted on January 10th, 2016, by YouTube[1] Srećko Delibašić in a video titled, "dramatic indian drama character introduction." The video featured a scene from the Indian soap opera Kasam se, meaning "The Promise," which aired over 700 episodes from 2006 to 2009. The series antogonist introduced in the clip is Indian actress Jaya Bhattacharya playing Jigyasa Bali. The video gathered over 9 million views in over five years (seen below).



Spread

Soon after the aforementioned post, YouTuber[2] Taylor Gar posted a video titled "Most dramatic scene ever," and gathered over 3 million views in over five years (seen below). This video clip was also from the soap opera Kasam Se, and featured the lead romantic interest, Jai Walia, being shocked to see the protagonist, Bani, after she was rumored to be dead.



On October 2nd, 2016, YouTuber[3] The Indian Idiot posted a video called "IF FRIENDS WERE AN INDIAN SOAP OPERA," and gathered over 600,000 views in nearly four years (seen below, left). On June 11th, 2019, YouTuber[4] Samo posted a video titled "If Attack on Titan were an Indian serial" and gathered over 1 million plays in nearly three years (seen below, right).
