About
Drew Like a Dark, Fucked Up Version of X Haha. Just a Glimpse Into My Dark Reality is a phrasal template used to caption two images: one showing a specific character and the other showing a "dark" and "fucked up" version of the character drawn by the meme's creator. The meme's humor typically stems from the fact that the "dark fucked up version" does not actually portray torment and contrasts the tone of the original creator's supposedly deep inner contemplation. The trend started as a Twitter meme in late 2021, continuing into early 2023 and spreading to other platforms like TikTok. In 2023, the trend stopped primarily using hand-drawn images as the secondary image. Ultimately, the meme's diction riffs on Welcome To My Twisted Mind and language popularized by Joker stereotypes.
Origin
On October 5th, 2021, Twitter[1] user kaiklops tweeted, "Drew like a dark, fucked up version of the hamburger helper mascot haha. Just a glimpse into my dark reality. A full stare into my twisted perspective would make most simply go insane Imao," and attached two images with one showing the Hamburger Helper mascot and the other showing a crudely drawn "evil" version of the character. In only one day, the tweet received roughly 17,600 likes (shown below).
Spread
Going into late 2021, other Twitter users posted variations of the phrasal template by substituting the character involved. For instance, the first known variation of the template was posted on October 6th, 2021, by Twitter[2] user Dj_Scoliosis, showing Homer Simpson and earning five likes (shown below, left). More viral iterations later surfaced, such as a tweet from Twitter[3] user Wheatskins_ on November 22nd, 2021, that was based on YouTuber Jack Manifold. It received roughly 13,900 likes in a year and a half (shown below, right).
The trend went largely dormant until January 2023 when a few viral tweets resurfaced it. This started on January 12th, 2023, when Twitter[4] user AlolanRabbifuto tweeted an iteration about Jigglypuff the Pokémon character, gaining roughly 30,300 likes in eight days (shown below, left). On January 13th, Twitter[5] user SO0u0o tweeted an iteration about Bluey, gaining roughly 37,500 likes in one week (shown below, right).
Soon after, the phrasal template spread to TikTok when TikToker[6] davidfreemanspamz posted a video on January 19th, 2023, about a "fucked up dark version of a smiley face" with the song "Bloodhail" by Have a Nice Life as the TikTok's sound, gaining roughly 249,600 plays and 62,300 likes in one day (shown below).
