Overview
Bluey is an Australian animated TV series from Ludo Studio about an energetic and curious anthropomorphic Blue Heeler puppy named Bluey. It gained a significant online following throughout the 2020s on sites including Reddit and TikTok, inspiring memes, fan art and trends including the "Unicorse, what's your favorite food?" lip dub sound on TikTok. The series, meant for a preschool audience, premiered on Disney Junior in 2018 and is also available on Disney+.
History
Bluey premiered on Disney Junior on October 1st, 2018. It was created as a replica of Peppa Pig targeted at Australian audiences due to the massive success of the series in America.[1] The series has received largely positive reception, with a 9.6/10 rating on IMDB[2] of 11,000 votes.
Online Presence
The /r/Bluey[3] subreddit was created on June 10th, 2008, and became a hub for memes and content about the show following its release in 2018. The subreddit has over 66,800 members as of December 2022. Bluey has numerous official social media accounts where clips and episodes of the show are uploaded, including a TikTok[4] page (@bluey) with over 1.1 million followers and a YouTube[5] channel (Bluey – Official Channel) with over 1.6 million subscribers.
Fan Art
Bluey became an increasingly prevalent subject of fan art and memes throughout 2019, including among the furry community due to its anthropomorphic characters. For example, on September 13th, 2019, Twitter[6] artist and furry @boxpupp posted a drawing of Bluey, garnering over 800 likes in three years (shown below, left). On September 14th, DeviantArt[7] user RayStarKitty posted a piece of artwork that gained over 14,000 views in the same span of time (shown below, right).
One prominent fan art trend surrounding the series sees artists draw Bluey and other characters from the show as humans. For example, on December 9th, 2022, Twitter[8] user @meatgirI posted artwork of the characters Muffin and Socks as humans, garnering over 29,000 likes in three days. On December 10th, Twitter[9] user @woodsjpeg posted a piece of art like this, garnering over 6,000 likes in two days (shown below).
TikTok
Bluey also gained a significant following on TikTok[10][11] throughout 2022. Some of the most popular videos showcase artwork of Bluey characters as humans (examples shown below).

On August 11th, 2022, TikToker[13] @kayatheshepherd posted a clip of their dog set to audio from season three episode eight of Bluey, titled "Unicorse," where Bluey asks Unicorse, "What's your favorite food?" and he responds in a whisper, "children." The original sound inspired over 27,000 uses in four months. The majority of the videos feature an animal or person looking innocent, followed by them looking dangerous or angry as "children" is spoken (examples shown below).
