End Wokeness' Alexander the Great Tweet refers to a February 2024 post shared by Twitter / X user End Wokeness (@EndWokeness) in which he claimed that Netflix had turned Alexander the Great gay in its new documentary called Alexander: The Making of a God. Reactions and memes were made about the tweet because End Wokeness was ignorant of Alexander the Great's storied homosexuality and he instead blamed it on Netflix being woke. As the tweet garnered attention, numerous X users mocked End Wokeness, represented in the viral quotes and eventual Community Note that corrected his claim.

Origin

On February 5th, 2024, X^[1] user @EndWokeness tweeted, "Netflix made a new documentary about Alexander The Great. Within the first 8 minutes, they turned him gay." The post included the movie poster from Netflix's new documentary Alexander: The Making of a God, as well as a recording of a scene in the docuseries showing Alexander kissing another man. The tweet received over 15.5 million views, 53,000 likes and 13,000 replies in a day (shown below).

Spread

Within the first hour of the post's upload, users posted viral quotes of the tweet humorously fact-checking End Wokeness' claim. For instance, an early, viral example was shared by X^[2] user @Votto007 on February 5th, 2024, who said, "First they turned Elton John and Freddie Mercury gay in their biopics and we said nothing. Now they’re doing it to Alexander the Great. It’s time to speak up," gaining over 3,500 likes in a day (shown below, left).

Also on February 5th, X^[3] user @esjesjesj tweeted a screenshot of the post, writing, "This Nazi is so fucking dumb," earning over 98,000 likes in a day (shown below, right).

During the same timeframe, End Wokeness received viral replies from right-leaning pundits, including the QAnon Shaman (Jake Angeli) who replied^[4] on February 5th, 2024, writing, "Just FYI from my reading of history, Alexander the Great was a well known bisexual who actually preferred men," gaining over 6,700 likes in a day (shown below, left).

Then, later on February 5th, X^[5] user @esjesjesj screenshotted the QAnon Shaman's reply, writing, "imagine being so fucking stupid the Q-Shaman is correcting you," receiving over 18,000 likes in a day (shown below, right).

Discourse and memes about the tweet spread across social media over the following day, evident in a post shared to /r/WhitePeopleTwitter^[6] by Redditor Ace-Ventura1934 on February 5th, 2024, that used a joke similar to @Votto007's tweet,^[2] gaining over 7,500 upvotes in a day (shown below, left).

Also on February 5th, Instagram^[7] user @coreyrforrester shared a screenshot of his own quote tweet, gaining over 3,000 likes in a day (shown below, right).

Viral reactions and memes about the tweet also surfaced on Facebook^[8][9] in early February 2024.

Community Note

On February 6th, 2024, a Community Note^[10] was added to the post and rated helpful. It read, "It is commonly accept amongst scholars that Alexander not only took part in aromantic sexual relationships with other men but was infact bisexual and maintained romantic relationships with men and women throughout his life" (shown below).
