About

Enough Champagne to Fill the Nile is a quote said by actor Gal Gadot in the 20th Century Studios film Death On The Nile, released on February 11th, 2022. After a trailer for the film included the line in late 2021, it became a catchphrase and exploitable on social media, primarily Twitter, as many commenters found her delivery stilted and unconvincing. After the film premiered, videos of movie theater audiences erupting in cheers and laughter at the line spread on social media.

Origin

On December 21st, 2021, a trailer for Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile premiered on social media. At one point in the trailer, Gal Gadot's character says, "We have the Karnak all to ourselves, a chef, and enough champagne … to fill the Nile!" as she tosses a glass of champagne over her shoulder into the river (shown below).

Spread

Shortly after the trailer aired, Twitter users were quick to begin mocking it. User @JesseHawken[1] joked that they included the line when problematic actors including Armie Hammer and Letitia Wright were in the film, gaining over 100 likes (shown below, left). User @guymrdth[2] opined, "gal gadot is such a fascinatingly bad actor that she almost achieves something surreal. every decision the wrong one but so lacking in subtlety that the gap between clear intention and what is actually performed makes you wonder how you’ve ever been convinced of emotion before," gaining over 760 retweets and 11,000 likes (shown below, right). They included the "enough champagne" line in the replies to illustrate their point.

Jesse Hawken ... @jessehawken The editor of the Death On The Nile trailer had a difficult decision to make: include footage of Armie Hammer and Letitia Wright, or remove it and add that shot of Gal Gadot awkwardly tossing the contents of her champagne flute overboard. When the film premiered on February 11th, 2022, jokes and commentary about the line reading increased in volume. Twitter user @leeo_medeiros posted a clip of an audience erupting in cheers and laughter when Gadot said the line in the movie, gaining over 220 retweets and 1,500 likes, while the video itself gained over 760,000 views in less than 24 hours (shown below).

Additionally, Vulture[3] wrote a satirical article wondering how much champagne it would actually take to fill the Nile River. Twitter user[4] Scott Mendelson argued that Gadot wasn't nearly as bad as the memeing on the moment would leave some to believe, noting that in the context of the film, the line comes when she is upset and trying to put on a brave face, which explains the stilted delivery.

Scott Mendelson ... @ScottMendelson Um, that "enough champagne to fill the Nile" bit in #DeathOnTheNile a that everyone is bagging on makes sense *in the context of the film*. At that moment, Gal Gadot is angry, scared and frustrated and putting on a fake and unconvincing brave face for those in her company.
