Overview
The 2026 Assassination of Ali Khamenei refers to the targeted killing of the Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during coordinated military strikes by Israel in Tehran, Iran, on February 28, 2026 launched by the United States and Israel, under the codename “Operation Epic Fury”. The operation reportedly involved precise airstrikes aimed at Khamenei’s residential and leadership compound in central Tehran, resulting in his death.
Background
On 28 February 2026, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ,who had led the Islamic Republic of Iran since 1989, was killed during a series of joint military strikes by the United States and Israel as part of a major offensive against Iranian targets in and around Tehran, Iran. Khamenei’s death occurred when the airstrike hit his residential and leadership compound in the capital. Satellite imagery and official statements confirmed that the targeted attack severely damaged key structures associated with his compound and that his body was later recovered and confirmed by Iranian state media.
The attack marked a significant escalation in long‑standing tensions between Iran and Western powers, particularly over issues such as Iran’s nuclear program and its regional influence. Khamenei, aged 86 at the time of his death, wielded supreme authority over Iran’s political, military, and judicial branches and was the country’s highest religious figure. His assassination represents one of the most consequential developments in Middle Eastern geopolitics in decades, triggering widespread international reaction, formal mourning within Iran, and uncertainty regarding the nation’s leadership succession.
