Overview

The Blade Indefinite Delay Controversy refers to the indefinite delay of Marvel Studios' 2025 Blade reboot, starring actor Mahershala Ali and actress Mia Goth, that was reported in late October 2024. The film was originally announced in 2019 but amassed setbacks in the following years. The movie's 2024 delay caused viral discourse, reactions and memes on social media platforms like Twitter / X, Reddit and TikTok, among others. Fans of the original 1998 Blade film and its franchise, starring actor Wesley Snipes, were upset by the indefinite delay.

Background

On July 20th, 2019, it was announced at Marvel's event during San Diego Comic-Con that Blade was getting a reboot, starring actor Mahershala Ali, and was set to release in 2025.[1] In the following years, the film received numerous setbacks, like in June 2024 when director Yann Demange exited the project. Sources stated that the decision was amicable.[2]

On October 22nd, 2024, Disney announced that Blade (2025) was indefinitely delayed. 20th Century Studios' Predator: Badlands would instead release in November 2025.[3]

The news was notably spread by the X[4] account @DiscussingFilm on October 22nd, whose post received roughly 14.4 million views and 65,000 likes in a day (shown below).

There have been numerous writers and directors, as well as supporting cast members, coming onto and abandoning the the project, one of the main points of contention seems to be that Marvel/Disney keeps pushing for Blade's daughter to be more prominent which leads to Blade becoming a supporting character in his own movie, a problem also suffered with Doctor Strange and the Multi-Verse of Madness having an evil Scarlet Witch (an idea which honestly just turned me off of the story all together) and the mostly loathed character of America Chavez being more important to the film's story than Strange himself or any of his proper villains.

All they had to do was make a movie about Mahershala Ali fighting vampires, instead they wanted to potentially muck up the entire story by introducing too many things like Blade's daughter and another character setting up a future Midnight Sons movie and potentially throwing Kit Harington's character from Eternals in there as well. We get it Marvel, you want to set things up, but you have sequels for that, let the first movie just focus on what we need. Seriously, when Mahershala Ali walked on stage at Comic Con and put on that Blade hat back in 2019 it should've been the easiest slam dunk in movie history.

I know the MCU isn't really "Doomed" as certain YouTubers claim every other day, but man it's disappointing to see how they've been fumbling so hard these last few years.
