Overview

The Cozy Grocery NYC Roommate Drama, also known as the Fire Escape Girl Drama or NYC Roommate Drama, refers to a viral social media controversy and story involving New York City-based TikTok creator and self-described full-time artist EK (cozygrocery) and her former roommate, Marlyn (marlynlikethefish), that largely unfolded and garnered virality in June 2026.

The dispute centered on EK's temporary sublet arrangement, her public documentation of searching for housing after being told she could not remain in the apartment and a GoFundMe campaign she launched to help cover housing costs.

After EK posted dozens of videos describing her experience and criticizing her living situation, Marlyn released a response disputing many of EK's claims and describing the arrangement as a short-term sublease that had always been intended to end. The exchange spread across TikTok, X / Twitter, Reddit and other social media platforms as people became enthralled with the viral story and weighed in on the drama.

Background

In late May 2026, TikTok[1] creator EK, @cozygrocery, began posting a multipart series documenting her housing situation after learning she would need to leave the Bushwick apartment she had been subletting for approximately two months.

In the videos, EK described herself as a full-time artist and photographer without a financial safety net and said she was struggling to secure permanent housing following a rent increase and income qualification requirements.

The series continued over the following weeks as EK continued posting dozens of videos about the drama and situation.

On June 21st, 2026, @cozygrocery[2] posted a video discussing ongoing issues with her roommate, with her characterizing the experience as emotionally distressing and connected it to the broader difficulties of building a life in New York City, at one point referencing NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani's remarks about persevering against difficult odds.

She also launched a GoFundMe campaign seeking assistance with rent and moving expenses while continuing to post updates about her housing search. The video received over 4.6 million views and 167,000 likes in 10 days.

On June 25th, 2026, EK posted what she labeled as the "finale" to the roommate situation, garnering nearly 1.1 million views, 8,600 likes and 1,200 comments in six days.

@cozygrocery thank you so much for getting me this far. your generosity is not wasted on me 🖤 this has been an absolutely horrible month with so much uncertainty, but i've been FLOODED with encouragement and support this month, more than i thought i would, and i promise you i am giving it back. i love new york and have always wanted to be a part of this city, but especially in the neighborhood i live in (and have just wanted to live in one apartment long enough to actually become invested ☠️). i'll be donating a portion of what was gifted to me to an organization that specifically deals with helping ppl who are unhoused in my current borough and who struggle with mental illness like i do (not asking for ppl to research for me btw, i'm fully taking care of this and am proud to be able to. i'll share updates as i go). also am genuinely just so excited to know i don’t have to move again and that i'm gonna actually be able to get to know the neighborhood i live in 😭 i've been given a platform from my art + sharing abt my life in new york; i transmuted this agonizing situation + uncertainty into my good, and i will do the same with the power i have through my community. i'll see you tomorrow, ok? we have more sunsets to see 🌙 #newyorkcity #fulltimeartist #roommates #newyork #nycartist ♬ original sound – EK

Roommate Shares Her Side Of The Story

The controversy escalated after EK's former roommate, Marlyn (@marlynlikethefish on TikTok), posted her own TikTok response offering a different account of the situation.

On June 24th, 2026, TikTok[3] user @marlynlikethefish, the roommate mentioned in the original video, posted a response stating that EK had entered the apartment under a temporary sublease agreement, that she had been given notice before the arrangement ended and that she had never been guaranteed a long-term lease. The video spread quickly, garnering over 3.8 million views and 446,000 likes in seven days.

Online Reactions

Following Marlyn's response in late June 2026, discussions regarding the controversy spread to X / Twitter and Reddit, where users analyzed both creators' videos and debated who was at fault as the story went viral.

Many commenters sided with Marlyn, arguing that EK had misrepresented a routine subletting situation as an eviction and criticizing her reliance on crowdfunding while pursuing a full-time artistic career.

On June 26th, 2026, Redditor postgrad-dep18the started a thread in the /r/NYCinfluencersnark[5] subreddit, posting, "cozygrocery is a whole mess and needs to move home," which received over 260 upvotes in five days.

Carter Baizen @rachellacroixs This is who I am talking about when I say people feel entitled to live in New York. She's had like 5 subleases this year and she made a go fund me for her rent because she won't get a job and just makes clay cats to sell. @tianathinks.digital

I hate to say I’m actually on art girls side when it comes to the lease stuff cause the other girl seems to be not telling the complete truth – master tenants manage the security deposit, collect rent, and have the right to evict. Joint and severed liability roommates are both on the lease together and both responsible for the lease and that is how landlords stay out of your roommate drama.
