Overview

Elegant Excessive Drinking Allegations refers to a series of stories tweeted about top Super Smash Brothers player Matthew "Elegant" Fitzpatrick in which he is alleged to have gotten excessively inebriated and behaved inappropriately with other members of the game's community. The allegations include charges of unwanted sexual contact, defecation and urination over others' persons and property, and general rudeness. The allegations led to discussions of alcohol's presence at Super Smash Brothers events.

Background

On September 5th, 2022, Twitter user @_Shannoniganz^[1] (henceforth referred to as "Shannon") posted a TwitLonger about Matthew "Elegant" Fitzpatrick. In her story, she says that she and Elegant, friends at the time, got blackout drunk and had sex at the Super Smash Brothers tournament Collision 2022, which took place in March 2022. Shannon recalls she did not initiate the sex but believes she did not resist. She felt disgusted the following morning but says she was willing to let it go and did not contact Elegant for months afterward.

At Super Smash Con 2022, which took place in August, she confronted Elegant about his drinking. She claims that Elegant, drunk during this conversation, was not receptive and attempted to get her to return to his hotel room, which she did not do. This interaction caused her to go public with her story about Elegant's drinking. She concludes that her story as well as others she has heard about Elegant made her feel unsafe around him and that she would not trust him to be around her female friends.

Developments

On September 6th, 2022 Elegant^[2] responded to Shannon's story. Of the sex, he wrote, "It was a one-time thing" that happened when they were both drunk, and that "It was a stupid decision made by us and I can understand why she feels this way." He expressed that he wished the story would have been kept between them so they could work it out privately, but he understood why she went public. He apologized to Shannon and anyone he made uncomfortable with his drunken behavior and stated he would not drink at Smash events again.

However, multiple people came forward with their own stories about Elegant drinking over the following day. User @SailorMegatron^[3] posted a story that included allegations of Elegant getting too drunk and urinating all over her hotel bathroom at Genesis 2022, and displaying threatening, aggressive behavior that made herself and others uncomfortable at Low Tide City 2022. User @KayJetShadow^[4] posted a story about Elegant getting blackout drunk in her parent's home, crawling into her bed at 4 in the morning, taking off his pants and peeing on her leg and mattress.

On September 7th, user @laurrypants,^[5] Elegant's former girlfriend, shared multiple stories from her experience with Elegant. These included getting violently angry while inebriated to the point of punching cars and walls on multiple occasions, blaming poor tournament performances on her, getting drunk to the point of vomiting and urinating on his clothes, running around naked, and being verbally abusive throughout their relationship.

Online Reactions

The stories caused the word "Elegant" to trend on Twitter on September 6th and September 7th. After Shannon's story, people debated whether the matter should have remained private and discussed the topic of alcohol at Smash events. Some recalled Elegant tweeting an insistence that he would be "better" than Nairo and others in 2020, referring to the sexual misconduct allegations that rocked the community that year (example by @jxzze^[6] shown below, left). Many stepped forward with their own, shorter anecdotes recalling Elegant's drunken behavior. Commentator and content creator @TKBreezy^[7] noted that he had twice asked Elegant to cut back or cut out drinking entirely in a tweet gaining over 70 retweets and 1,300 likes in one day (shown below, right).
