Overview
Elon Musk Reinstates Dom Lucre Controversy, also known as Elon Musk Unsuspends CSAM Poster, refers to a controversial incident regarding the dissemination of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) content on Twitter in late July 2023. Conservative commentator Dom Lucre (@dom_lucre) allegedly posted a screenshot of a CSAM film to his Twitter on July 22nd, 2023, and faced a temporary suspension for violating Twitter's rules against child sexual exploitation. Days later, Lucre's account was reinstated after Elon Musk acknowledged the reason for his suspension, leading many to question the legality and ethicality of allowing an account that shares CSAM content to stay online. Lucre subsequently denied sharing the CSAM photos, insisting that he only shared a link to a news article, despite evidence proving otherwise. The subreddit /r/law banned links and embeds that lead to Twitter following the controversy as many others voiced opposition to the decision online.
Background
On July 22nd, 2023, Twitter user @dom_lucre posted a series of tweets describing child sexual abuse material (CSAM) that was created by Peter Gerard Scully, an Australian sex offender, and pedophile currently serving a life imprisonment sentence and an additional 129 years in prison for numerous crimes against minors in the Philippines. Dom Lucre posted a summary of the case alongside a screenshot from a snuff film called Daisy's Destruction, which was made and distributed by Scully.[5]
Dom Lucre's post describing Scully's case and the snuff film received an unknown number of views before it was deleted for violating Twitter's rules against posting child sexual exploitation (CSE) content. [1] However, the tweet was up online for at least four days and viewed by an unknown number of Lucre's 500,000 followers and other Twitter users (seen below).
On July 26th, Dom Lucre's account was then banned, leading various Twitter users to comment on the supposed censorship his account was facing. For example, Twitter users @KariLake[2] and @EdKrassen[3] posted about Lucre's suspension, with Elon Musk replying[4] to the latter by detailing the reasons for Lucre's suspension. Musk added that "only people on our CSE team have seen those pictures," though the various replies to the tweet refuted this claim.
Developments
Dom Lucre Denies Allegations
Dom Lucre denied posting CSAM content after his account was reinstated on July 27th, 2023. That same day, Lucre posted a tweet[6] sharing a screenshot of the violation he received from Twitter, asking, "If I shared CHILD PORN WHERE THE FUCK IS THE PORN? A news article link like YOU SHARED?" The post gathered over 17,000 likes in a day (seen below, left). Also on July 27th, Lucre shared screenshots of an interaction he had with a reporter who covered the story, pointing to a different tweet dated July 27th (instead of the July 22nd CSE violation) in an effort to deny having shared CSAM content (seen below, right).[7]
Online Reactions
On July 26th, 2023, Twitter[8] user @faineg posted a tweet showing various replies to Lucre's tweet containing CSE, which confirms that, contrary to Lucre's claims, Lucre did in fact post CSAM content. The replies[9][10] also prove that, contrary to Musk's claims, Twitter users outside the censorship team viewed the CSAM content.
You're claiming that no one actually saw the hideous child sexual abuse materials you let remain on your platform, posted by an account with over 500K followers, Elon Musk? pic.twitter.com/ytpamh9LVi
