Overview

The Hasan Piker China Trip is a multi-day trip to China livestreamed on Twitch by leftist political streamer Hasan Piker, or Hasanabi, that began on November 10th, 2025. Clips from the stream went viral on social media as it took place, including on sites like Reddit and X / Twitter. Several of these clips inspired controversy online, including a clip of Piker having his phone confiscated and reportedly searched by Chinese police while at Tiananmen Square for showing a Red Sun in the Sky meme of Mao Zedong (former Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party, or CCP) with his face edited onto the image.

A subsequent clip of Piker responding to the incident and claiming that the American government is still worse than the Chinese government also sparked backlash, along with a clip of Piker saying he has "no patriotism" in his heart for the United States. Rumors that Piker was arrested in China also began to spread online in mid-November 2025, although these rumors were false.

Background

First Day / Tiananmen Square Mao Meme Incident

On November 10th, 2025, Hasan Piker hosted his first Twitch[1] stream from China, gaining over 850,000 views in two days. Notably, about two-and-a-half hours into the stream, Piker visited Tiananmen Square for a flag-raising ceremony. While attending the ceremony, someone on Piker's crew showed off a Red Sun In The Sky meme in which Piker's face was placed onto Mao Zedong's body. The stream went down for about 10 minutes after the cops approached Piker and his crew.

The clip was reuploaded that day by X[2] user @DrewPavlou and shortly after, was uploaded to the /r/LivestreamFail [3] subreddit, garnering over 49,000 likes and 5 million views on the former and 22,000 upvotes on the latter in two days.

Developments

"No Patriotism" Clip

Later on in the November 10th, 2025, stream, which carried over to the next day in China, Hasan Piker was clipped saying that he has "no patriotism" in his heart for America, clarifying that he cares about the people.

In the full clip, which comes around the 3:37:00 timestamp, Piker is talking about how interesting it is to see how many people attended the flag raising. He says, "I don't have any sort of patriotism in my heart for America [or] just in general. I care about people, so for me, it's hard to comprehend. But I do understand it in some ways."

The clip from the livestream was uploaded by numerous people shortly after, including X[4] user @EndWokeness, on November 11th, garnering over 7,100 likes in a day.

Response To Mao Meme Incident

About 4:40:00 into the November 10th, 2025, China stream, Hasan Piker addresses the incident when his phone was searched by CCP police. In his response, Piker claims that the flag-raising ceremony is "not a thing that white people normally go to." He then assumes that the Chinese police are more attentive to white people who might "do some fuck shit" at the ceremony.

He continues and says that the police officer "thought he saw something on the phone" to make a mockery of the Chinese government and didn't realize they were "swagged out white boys who love China." He says the incident was solved by explaining himself to the police, then adds that he wants to show Americans that China won't arrest people for a meme. He then says, "the further west you go, the worse cops get," mentioning American and European cops and saying American cops are the worst out of all of them.

The clip was uploaded by X[5] user @Awk20000 on November 11th, garnering over 2 million views in a day.

Interview With Li Jingjing

On November 11th, 2025, Chinese journalist and internet personality Li Jingjing (who works for China Global Television Network, CGTN, one of the three branches of state-run China Media Group that's under control of the CCP) posted a series of photos to X[6] of herself with Hasan Piker, who sat down with her for an interview.

The post reads, "I sat down with Hasan Piker, who just started his long-awaited trip to China. He will travel across several cites [sic] in two weeks," garnering over 10,000 likes in a day. The interview was not livestreamed, and Jingjing teased a later release date.

After the announcement, the interview garnered some controversy online from people who claimed that Jingjing is a propagandist.

For example, on November 12th, X[7] user @DrewPavlou, a known critic of Piker, posted an image of Piker with Jingjing and a meme posted by Jingjing about propaganda, writing, "She is known for travelling to Xinjiang and doing smiling dances in Uyghur costumes to try prove that there is no mass sterilization campaign against Uyghurs," garnering over 3,000 likes in under a day.

Drew Pavlou @DrewPavlou Subscribe ... Today Hasan Piker sat down with Li Jingjing, one of the most vile Chinese Communist Party state media propagandists. She is known for travelling to Xinjiang and doing smiling dances in Uyghur costumes to try prove that there is no mass sterilisation campaign against Uyghurs. The Uyghur birth rate collapse from 2017-2019 remains one of the worst short term fertility collapses in recorded human history - worse than the numbers we have for the fertility collapse in Gaza the past two years. On a percent drop over a single year or two, the Uyghur case (-44% to -56% in one year; -49% in two years) is as steep as the most dramatic genocide-era collapses we can document with official population-wide statistics (Cambodian Genocide -53% across the 1970s trough).
