Overview

PETA's "Not Cake" Tweet refers to a controversial post using the Everything Is Cake meme on Twitter in July 2020 by People for the Ethical Treament of Animals of a cat dissection. The graphic image caused Twitter users to speak out against PETA and warn others of the post.

Background

On July 13th, 2020, The @peta[2] Twitter account posted an image of a dead cat's face cut in two with the caption, "Not cake #CutOutDissection" (shown below). The tweet garnered over 2,900 retweets and comments and 1,400 likes in two days.

Developments

On July 13th, 2020, Twitter user @bork_21[3] responded to seeing the post by tweeting, "FUCK PETA FOR PUTTING THAT DISGUSTING SHIT ON THE TL WITHOUT WARNING. AND USING THE TORTURE OF A CAT AS A FUCKING CAKE JOKE?? YOU PEOPLE ARE MONSTERS. FUCK PETA" (shown below, left). The tweet gained over 3,500 likes and 600 retweets in two days. That same day, @isleofcorgis[4] replied to PETA's tweet with an image of a person sliced in half captioned, "Let's post a picture of a dead animal being dissected for science, that'll make people vegan!" (shown below, right). The post received over 5,900 likes and 240 retweets in two days.

On July 14th, Twitter user @seananmcguire[5] responded by tweeting, "PETA makes me so angry. Tweeting any sort of gore is a way to traumatize people. It doesn't create vegans out of nothing; it is an upsetting, triggering method of flexing moral superiority, like showing porn to children to make them go 'ew, gross'" (shown below). The tweet accumulated over 5,000 likes and 800 retweets in a day. Newsweek[1] reposted on the backlash PETA received for the tweet.
