Overview
Sheer / See-Through Clothing YouTube Videos, also known as the Sheer Clothing Trend or See-Through Dress Trend, refers to a series of videos posted to YouTube in which women try on clothing (often called "hauls"), including lingerie, that offers views of their breasts and genitals lightly obscured by see-through or open-weave clothing. As videos in the style racked up views, some commenters online voiced that it was a cynical ploy to draw views, similar to the Twitch Sexual Content Meta. Some YouTubers and streamers also voiced frustration with the content in light of how YouTube has punished some creators for seemingly less blatant offenses of the site's adult content policy.
Background
While YouTube has previously hosted videos in which women try on sexy clothing, the start of a dedicated "meta," or popular trend, of uploading videos dedicated to see-through, sheer and open-weave clothing began roughly in February 2024.
On February 7th, 2024, the YouTube account "Transparent Try Ons With Kelsey" posted its first video,[1] showing the content creator and YouTuber named Kelsey in a sheer black top with her uncensored breasts clearly visible (screenshot shown below, left). The video gained over 175,000 views in four months. On February 21st, she posted her first video to cross one million views,[2] racking up 3.6 million in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).
Developments
Over the following months, multiple other channels began posting videos in which they tried on see-through and sheer clothing, with many of them racking up hundreds of thousands of views in subsequent months. For example, on April 27th, 2024, YouTuber Lala[3] posted a video that gained over 148,000 views in six weeks (shown below, left). On March 28th, YouTuber Nekoniko_fox[4] posted a video in which they "tested the paint" on a white T-shirt by standing in the shower with the white T-shirt on, gaining over 2.5 million views in two and a half months (shown below, right).
As others online learned about the trend, they voiced frustration that YouTube was apparently fine with the content despite numerous crackdowns on NSFW or controversial content in previous years.
On May 14th, 2024, Redditor FunTemperature5150 voiced frustration with the trend after supposedly catching their teen nephew watching the videos, gaining over 200 points in the /r/YouTube[5] subreddit in one month (shown below, top). On June 5th, Twitch streamer PaymoneyWubby voiced frustration on a stream that YouTube was allowing content like that on their platform but struck other videos for seemingly less egregious offenses (shown below, bottom).
