About

The Third PrequelMemes-SequelMemes War (March 23-28, 2018), often called the Meme World War, was a Meme War that took place between r/PrequelMemes and r/SequelMemes, who brought in many of their 'allies'. The war was hosted on r/MemeWorldWar, where the side in favor of r/PrequelMemes were called the Allies, and the side in favor of r/SequelMemes were called the Resistance. As the name implies, it is the third 'Meme War' between r/PrequelMemes and r/SequelMemes.

Prelude to the War

On March 20th, 2018, the moderators of r/PrequelMemes declared a 24 hour suspension of rules[1]. A picture of a trebuchet made it to the front page during the suspension, signifying an alliance between r/PrequelMemes and r/trebuchetmemes.

During the suspension, r/SequelMemes launched a raid onto r/PrequelMemes[2]. Then, the subscribers of r/PrequelMemes decided to go to an official war, starting the Third PrequelMemes-SequelMemes war[3].

Start of the War

r/trebuchetmemes formed an official alliance with r/PrequelMemes, thus forming the Allies. As a response, r/catapult_memes formed an alliance with r/SequelMemes, thus forming the Axis (later called the Resistance). r/GarlicBreadMemes ended up being the next member of the Allies – who later picked up r/raimimemes . The Axis later included r/breadstapledtotrees.

The war was, for the most part, a stalemate. That is, until, r/freefolk joined the war on the side of the Allies, due to an invitation. r/freefolk was a relatively large subreddit, and had allowed the Allies to have a significantly larger amount of supporters than the Axis.

Due to the increasing amount of newer subreddits joining the war, a subreddit called r/MemeWorldWar[4] was created on March 23rd, 2018, where the meme could continue without causing brigades. The Axis later gained r/breadstapledtotrees

Entry of r/funny

r/funny is the second largest subreddit on Reddit, with a total of 18,974,028 subscribers[5]. On March 23rd, the Axis claimed that r/funny was part of their alliance. This now made the Allies severely outnumbered. However, the lack of support for r/funny on Reddit's general meme community led to many new subreddit joining the Allies – namely r/crusadememes, r/christianmemes, r/lotrmemes, r/IncrediblesMemes, and r/Kaiserreich.

The next major members of the Allies included r/SurrealMemes, and later r/bigniggasaga. Despite the new entries, the Allies still didn't match the user count of r/funny.
