About

Faria Limer is a Brazilian-Portuguese slang term that refers to people who work on one of the main finance streets in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, the Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Lima. Similar to Wall Street in the United States, the workers who frequent the Brazilian street received the nickname from a popular news website in December 2019, which turned into a common slang term and inspired memes on social media.

Origin

The Faria Limer slang term was coined on December 13th, 2019 by the Brazilian journalists Ana Carolina Soares and Mariana Rosario in a news article for the Veja São Paulo Magazine.[1] The article explains the lives of the workers of the busiest financial street in São Paulo, Brazil, the Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Lima. In the article, the journalists detail the perceived personalities, styles, and mannerisms of the Faria Limer (magazine cover seen below).

Spread

The news article gained viral interest on social media on the same day it was released online, inspiring memes using the slang term created by the journalists. For instance, Twitter[2] page @greengodict translated the slang term to English on December 13th, 2019, receiving 913 likes and 251 retweets in four years (seen below).

The content of the report amused people who worked at the Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Lima, and many started to use nickname amongst themselves. The term was also used by those who live far from the region, but recognize the validity in the jokes about Faria Limers. For example, Twitter[3] @camisgray shared an image of chaotic car traffic on Faria Lima Avenue as a way to mock the Faria Limers. The post (seen below, left) garnered 3,000 likes and 570 retweets in four years. Another instance mocking the workers of that Brazilian region was posted by Twitter[4] user @mthlimao on December 13th, comparing the magazine cover portrayal of a Faria Limer with Jim from The Office. The post (seen below, right) garnered 211 likes and 39 retweets in four years.
